I read all the comments about this bookcase before I ordered it. A scratch was mentioned on both side panels, midway. I purchased it anyway as the sides would not show. I did get one with scratches. I also bought because I knew the BUSH PRODUCTS. They make good products. I am very pleased with mine. I would recommend these.

I like the way this piece looks all in all, and how much weight it can bear. It was also easy to put together. It was disappointing, however, that the "wood grain" on the decorative trim was peeling off in some places and one of the shelves was chipped but I let it go because the chip was in an inconspicuous place.. I was able to use a furniture marker on the spots where the paper was peeling off and now it is barely noticeable. All in all, I am very happy with it for the cost - everything else I was looking at at this size and load-bearing capabilities was a couple hundred dollars more.

        Generally I'm happy with the product, but here are some things I wish I knew ahead of time. 1. You need a 2nd person to bring it into your house unless you're REALLY strong . (I hurt my back and arm pulling it the 10 feet into the garage from where the delivery man left it outdoors and needed two strong guys to bring it the 30 feet from the garage into the house.) 2. They recommend there be a 2nd person for several assembly steps. It's possible to do it alone, as I did, but it's not easy, and you need a long counter/piece of furniture as a brace at times. 3. There are NO spare parts in the package. Two of the screw bolts (not sure what they're called) didn't work in my 2nd unit. It knocked off the top and sides just marginally, probably enough so that only I'll notice, but still not great. 4. The directions are fairly straightforward, but a couple steps could have been clearer. In the booklet with my 1st unit, several steps were out of order and repeated. The 2nd booklet (which I didn't open until later) was fine. 5. Do yourself a favor. DON'T put the little metal brackets on the top and bottom of the vertical edges. I'm not bad with a hammer, so it tells you something that I couldn't make one out of eight fit. A few of them damaged the wood underneath in the process of trying. 6. I read somewhere that the shelf capacity was 84 lbs. apiece, which is a big draw for me as a professor. Wrong: Shelf capacity is 30 lbs. apiece, a huge difference. (Note: I don't recall if I read it in a review or as part of the sale pitch. In fairness, it is clearly printed in the instruction booklet.) Bottom line: I'm not the most adept person out there, but I'm the daughter of a contractor and know one end of the hammer from the other. I averaged 2.5 to 3 hours assembling each unit, plus 15 minutes unpacking each one. The 2nd one would have gone faster if not for the defective pieces I mentioned. The bookcases look nice. I bought them to keep my nine-month-old son from being able to topple over the much less sturdy ones there before and feel relatively confident that I made a good call. I would have preferred something other than particle board for the back, but the rest of the pieces are of solid craftsmanship. I would recommend the unit with the aforementioned caveats.
